Israelites Complaints

The Israelites' complaints often stemmed from "spiritual amnesia"—forgetting God's power in delivering them—leading to at least 15 recorded instances of grumbling from Egypt to the Promised Land.

First: The Brick Quota (Exodus 5:1-23) – Following Moses' request to let the people go, Pharaoh ordered them to produce the same daily quota without being supplied straw. The leaders complained to Moses and Aaron, calling upon God to judge them because of the apparent failure of their attempt to free Israel. God initiated the Ten Plagues against Egypt to break Pharaoh's power.

Second: Red Sea Panic (Exodus 14:5–29) – When trapped between the Red Sea and Pharaoh's approaching army, the Israelites panicked and complained to Moses, questioning why they were brought out of Egypt to die in the desert. God divided the sea and the Israelites crossed safely while the Egyptian army was destroyed.

Third: The Bitter Water (Exodus 15:22-27) – The Israelites traveled for three days without finding water, which led them to a place called Marah. The water was bitter and undrinkable, causing the people to grumble against Moses who made the water sweet.

Fourth: The Wilderness of Sin (Exodus 16:1-36) – The Israelites complain to Moses and Aaron about severe hunger, wishing they had died in Egypt where they had plenty of food. They claimed they were brought into the desert to starve, leading God to provide quail for meat and manna (bread from heaven).

Fifth: Rephidim Water Crisis (Exodus 17:1-7) – The Israelites complain to Moses at Rephidim because there is no water to drink, accusing him of bringing them out of Egypt to kill them and their livestock with thirst. Moses strikes a rock, and water gushed out for the people to drink.

Sixth: The Golden Calf (Exodus 32:1-8) – While Moses was on Sinai, The people complained about Moses absence & forsake the Lord by creating a golden calf and altar. As a result, the Levites killed 3,000 people because they worshiped the idol.

Seventh: The People Complained about Their hardship (Numbers 11:1-35) – God heard their grumbling and sent fire to consume the outskirts of the camp. Then He sent quail and as meat was still between their teeth, a deadly plague strikes.

Eighth: Complaints about Moses' Leadership (Numbers 12:1-15) – Miriam and Aaron spake against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married and grew envious of Moses' exclusive authority. Miriam was subsequently struck with leprosy for seven days as divine punishment.

Ninth: Twelve Spies Were Sent to Explore Canaan (Numbers 14:1–9): Ten of the scouts reported that the inhabitants were giants and cities were fortified. Those who spread the bad report were struck down by a plague. Joshua and Caleb alone survive.

Tenth: The People Wanted to Kill Moses and Se4ect Another Leader (Numbers 14:10-35) – After hearing the Spies' report, the Israelites refused to enter the Promised Land due to fear, unbelief, and distrust in God. God sentenced all adults twenty years or older to die in the wilderness, except Caleb and Joshua.

Eleventh: Key Leaders Rebel Against Moses (Numbers 16:41-40) – The Rebellion of Korah and some Reubenites challenging Moses' leadership and Aaron's priesthood. As a result, God opens the earth and swallows the offenders–"all the men who belonged to Korah" and sent fire to consume the 250 men who were with them.

Twelfth: The Israelites Accuse Moses of Killing God's People (Numbers 16:41-50) – After Korah and his followers were destroyed, the people complained and God sent a plaque which left 14,700 dead. Moses sent Aaron to make atonement for them and the plaque stopped.

Thirteenth: God Affirmed Aaron as the Priestly Authority (Numbers 17:1-13) – After Korah challenged Aaron's priesthood, God told Moses to collect a staff from every tribal chief. Aaron's staff had sprouted as a sign that God chose Aaron to confirm God's choice.

Fourteenth: The People Complained Again Because of No Water (Numbers 20:1-12) – Moses and Aaron were ordered to speak to the rock to bring water but instead struck the rock as instructed by God. Because of their rebellion, Aaron died and Moses was forbidden to enter into the Promised Land.

Fifteenth: The People Grew Impatient Numbers 21:4-9) – The Israelites complained once again about the food (manna) and the journey. So God sent venomous snakes which bit the people and many died. Moses made a bronze serpent and mounted it on a pole. Anyone who looked at the snake survived.
