All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17
A few years ago, I "read" the Bible in its entirety by listening to the audio version. Even though I was familiar with many of the stories, I suddenly felt the Holy Spirit nudging me to thoroughly study and understand it. So I began my journey. At first I decided that I would go through it chronologically. I started with Job. Perhaps that was not the best place to start but nevertheless, it was where my journey began. I started to study daily, early in the morning (the best time of the day for me) and soon found myself diving deep into the Scriptures. I have been studying the Bible verse-by-verse which involves slow, deliberate analysis of small passages to understand the original author's intent.
My Methods:
Scripture interprets Scripture – Comparing similar phrases, themes, and passages within the Bible is a foundational method of study that provides clarity, context, and a deeper understanding of the text. By allowing the Bible to serve as its own best commentator, the original meaning focuses on what the author originally intended, rather than letting isolated verses be taken out of context to support personal opinions.
Using study Bibles, commentaries, and examining historical/cultural backgrounds helps uncover the original meaning of customs, societal norms, and historical events. However, always interpret Scripture first. Commentaries are written by fallible humans; analyze their arguments rather than accepting them as absolute truth.
Online, verse-by-verse Bible studies and audio series are widely available through podcasts, websites, and apps, offering accessible, high-quality instruction, systematic, chapter-by-chapter exposition, often for free. Very often, different teachers offer different perspectives to Bible study which helps to uncover overlooked details leading to a more profound and well-rounded understanding of God's Word.
Comprehensive Bible study tools that integrate commentaries, concordances, and interlinear, original-language tools are available through high-quality websites. Bible study tools can help provide important historical context, find translation differences between versions, and determine the true meaning of a passage.
Bible study groups can be very beneficial in many ways. Exploring scriptures in a group deepens understanding and builds wisdom through shared perspectives and communal accountability. Engaging with others helps believers grow spiritually, gain diverse insights into God's Word. Community study offers different viewpoints, helping to unlock deeper meanings and clarify truths.
By compiling personal notes, studies, and reflections, I have created my own tailored resource that reflects my spiritual journey. I hope to find other open minded people who have a personal relationship with God and are as interested as I am to study the Bible.
