Easter Bible Study
Timeline: 30 AD – Hebrew Year 3790
ResourcesThe crucifixion of Jesus was a part of God's plan from the very beginning. The entire Bible points to Jesus Christ. From the beginning: Adam and Eve faced the consequences of their sin, but God, being gracious, revealed the first promise of the Savior, Jesus. They were saved by grace.
Genesis 3:15, "And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel."
Notice that the word Seed and His are capitalized? That is not a mistake. On the cross Satan bruised the heel of Christ, causing His death. He bore our judgment upon Calvary's cross and, in doing so, bruised His heel. It was there where Satan was initially defeated. The bruised head of the serpent speaks to the final judgment of Satan.
There are estimated to be hundreds of prophecies about Jesus, including passages that allude to or prefigure Jesus. While many different prophecies speak of Jesus' ministry, the most significant speak of His death, burial, and resurrection. Jesus Himself predicted his death many times in the Gospels:
Matthew 16:21–28, 17:22–23, 20:17–19, 26:1–2Mary Honors Jesus
Mark 8:31-33, 9:30-32, 10:32-34
Luke 9:22–27
John 12:7–8, 13:33, 14:25, 37-38
John 12:1-11, 17-19Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was who had been dead, whom He had raised from the dead. There they made Him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with Him. Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.
But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, who would betray Him, said, "Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?" This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it.
But Jesus said, "Let her alone; she has kept this for the day of My burial. For the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always."
A Second Anointing
Two days before the Passover, Jesus was dining with a Pharisees. A sinful woman from that town brought an alabaster jar of perfume. She wept and her tears fell on Jesus' feet. She wiped them with her hair, then kissed his feet and anointed them with the perfume. Then Jesus forgave her of her sins.
The Triumphal Entry
Matthew 21:1-11, Mark 11:1-11, Luke 19:28-44, John 12:12-19The next day a great multitude had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. Now when they drew near Jerusalem, and came to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, "Go into the village opposite you, and as soon as you have entered it you will find a donkey tied, and a colt tied with her on which no one has ever sat. Loose it and bring it here. And if anyone says to you, 'Why are you doing this?' thus you shall say to him, 'Because The Lord has need of it,' and immediately he will send it here."
All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying:
"Tell the daughter of Zion,
'Behold, your King is coming to you,
A colt, the foal of a donkey.' " blockquote >So the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them and found the colt tied by the door outside on the street, and they loosed it. But as they were loosing the colt, the owners of it said to them, "Why are you loosing the colt?" And they spoke to them just as Jesus had commanded. So they let them go. Then they brought the colt to Jesus, laid their own clothes on the colt.
Then Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written:
"Fear not, daughter of Zion;
Behold, your King is coming,
Sitting on a donkey's colt." blockquote >His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about Him and that they had done these things to Him.
Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion!
Shout in triumph, O Daughter of Jerusalem!
See, your King comes to you, righteous and victorious,
humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. Therefore the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of his tomb and raised him from the dead, bore witness. For this reason the people also met Him, because they heard that He had done this sign.
Then, as He was now drawing near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen. And a very great multitude spread their clothes on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road. Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying:
"Hosanna to the Son of David!
Blessed is the King of Israel who comes in the name of the LORD!
Blessed is the kingdom of our father David!
Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!
Hosanna in the highest!"And when He had come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, "Who is this?"
So the multitudes said, "This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee."
The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, "You see that you are accomplishing nothing. Look, the world has gone after Him!"
And some of the Pharisees called to Him from the crowd, "Teacher, rebuke Your disciples."
But He answered and said to them, "I tell you that if these should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out."
And Jesus went into Jerusalem and into the temple. So when He had looked around at all things, as the hour was already late, He went out to Bethany with the twelve.
Fig Tree Cursed
Matthew 21:18-19; Mark 11:12-19Now the next day, when they had come out from Bethany, He was hungry. He went to see if perhaps He would find something on it. And seeing a fig tree by the road, He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs, and said to it, "Let no fruit grow on you ever again."
And His disciples heard it.
Jeremiah 8:13 "No grapes shall be on the vine, Nor figs on the fig tree, And the leaf shall fade; And the things I have given them shall pass away from them."
Jeremiah 8:13 "No grapes shall be on the vine, Nor figs on the fig tree, And the leaf shall fade; And the things I have given them shall pass away from them."
Jesus Cleanses the Temple
Matthew 21:12-17; Luke 19:45-48So they came to Jerusalem. Then Jesus went into the temple of God and began to drive out those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. And He would not allow anyone to carry wares through the temple. Then He taught, saying to them, "Is it not written, 'My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations'? But you have made it a 'den of thieves.' "
Isaiah 56:7 Even them I will bring to My holy mountain, and make them joyful in My house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on My altar; for My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations."
And He was teaching daily in the temple. Then the blind and the lame came to Him in the temple, and He healed them.
And Jesus said to them, "Yes. Have you never read,
'Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have perfected praise'?"Psalms 8:2 Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have ordained strength, Because of Your enemies, That You may silence the enemy and the avenger.
But when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that He did, and the children crying out in the temple and saying, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" they were indignant and said to Him, "Do You hear what these are saying?"
And He was teaching daily in the temple. But the chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people sought to destroy Him, and were unable to do anything; for they feared Him, because all the people were astonished at His teaching. When evening had come, He went out of the city to Bethany, and He lodged there.
Fig Tree Withered
Matthew 21:20-21; Mark 11:20-24Now in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots. And Peter, remembering, said to Him, "Rabbi, look! The fig tree which You cursed has withered away." And when the disciples saw it, they marveled, saying, "How did the fig tree wither away so soon?"
So Jesus answered and said to them, "Assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith in God and do not doubt in his heart but believes, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but also if you say to this mountain, 'Be removed and be cast into the sea,' it will be done. And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive."
Jesus' Authority Questioned
Matthew 21:23-27; Mark 11:27-33; Luke 20:1-8Then they came again to Jerusalem. Now when He came into the temple, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people confronted Him as He was teaching and preached the gospel, and said, "By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority?"
But Jesus answered and said to them, "I also will ask you one question; which if you tell Me, I likewise will tell you by what authority I do these things: The baptism of John—where was it from? From heaven or from men? Answer Me."
And they reasoned among themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' He will say to us, 'Why then did you not believe him?' But if we say, 'From men,' we fear the multitude, for all count John as a prophet." So they answered Jesus and said, "We do not know."
And Jesus answered and said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things."The Plot to Kill Jesus
Matthew 26:1-5; Mark 14:1-2; Luke 22:1-2; John 11:45-57Now it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, that He said to His disciples, "You know that after two days is the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified."
Then many of the Jews who had seen the things Jesus did, believed in Him. But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them the things Jesus did. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and said, "What shall we do? For this Man works many signs. If we let Him alone like this, everyone will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and nation."
And one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing at all, nor do you consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation should perish." Now this he did not say on his own authority; but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, and not for that nation only, but also that He would gather together in one the children of God who were scattered abroad.
Then, from that day on, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people plotted to take Jesus by trickery and put Him to death for they feared the people. But they said, "Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar among the people."
And the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went from the country up to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves. Then they sought Jesus, and spoke among themselves as they stood in the temple, "What do you think—that He will not come to the feast?" Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command, that if anyone knew where He was, he should report it, that they might seize Him.
Therefore Jesus no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim, and there remained with His disciples.
Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus
Matthew 26:14-16; Mark 14:10-11; Luke 22:3-6Then Satan entered Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered among the twelve. So he went his way and conferred with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray Him to them. He said, "What are you willing to give me if I deliver Him to you?" And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. And they counted out to him thirty pieces of silver.
Zechariah 11:12 Then I said to them, "If it is agreeable to you, give me my wages; and if not, refrain." So they weighed out for my wages thirty pieces of silver. So he promised and sought opportunity how he might conveniently betray Him in the absence of the multitude.
Second Anointing at Bethany
Matthew 26:1-13; Mark 14:3-9And when Jesus was in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, a woman came to Him having an alabaster flask of very costly fragrant oil, and she broke the flask and poured it on His head as He sat at the table. But when His disciples saw it, they were indignant among themselves, and said, "Why was this fragrant oil wasted? For this fragrant oil might have for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor." And they criticized her sharply.
But when Jesus was aware of it, He said to them, "Let her alone. Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a good work for Me. For you have the poor with you always, and whenever you wish you may do them good; but Me you do not have always. She has done what she could. For in pouring this fragrant oil on My body, she has come beforehand to anoint My body for burial. Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her."
The Last Supper
Matthew 26:17-19; Mark 14:12-16; Luke 22:7-13Now on the first day of the Feast of the Unleavened Bread, when they killed the Passover lamb, the disciples came to Jesus, saying to Him, "Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?"
Exodus 12:6 Now you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month. Then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at twilight.
And He sent Peter and John, saying, "Go into the city to a certain man carrying a pitcher of water, and say to him, 'The Teacher says, "My time is at hand." Follow him into the house which he enters. Say to the master of the house, 'I will keep the Passover at your house with My disciples. Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover?"' Then he will show you a large upper room, furnished and prepared; there make ready for us."
o the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and came into the city, and found it just as He had said to them; and they prepared the Passover.
Jesus institutes the Lord's Supper
Matthew 26:26-29; Mark 14:22-24; Luke 22:14-20When the hour had come, He sat down, and the twelve apostles with Him. Then He said to them, "With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God."
And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, "Take, eat; this is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me."
Then He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you, and they all drank from it. This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. Assuredly, I say to you, I will no longer drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in My Father's kingdom."
Jesus Washes the Disciples' Feet
John 13:3-17Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.
Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, "Lord, are You washing my feet?"
Jesus answered and said to him, "What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this."
Peter said to Him, "You shall never wash my feet!"
Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me."
Simon Peter said to Him, "Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!"
Jesus said to him, "He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you." For He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, "You are not all clean."
So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
Matthew 20:27-28 And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."
Jesus Identifies His Betrayer
Matthew 26:21-25; Mark 14:17-21; Luke 22:21-23, 35-38; John 13:2, 10, 18-32Jesus said to [Peter], "He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you." For He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, "You are not all clean."
Now as they were eating, He said, "Assuredly, I say to you, one of you who eats with Me will betray Me."
"I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but that the Scripture may be fulfilled, 'He who eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.' Now I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I am He. Most assuredly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me."
Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of His disciples. Simon Peter, whom Jesus loved, therefore motioned to him to ask who it was of whom He spoke. Then, he said to Him, "Lord, who is it?"
Then the disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom He spoke. And they were exceedingly sorrowful, and then they began to question among themselves, which of them it was who would do this thing and one by one by one began to say to Him, "Is it I?"
And another said, "Is it I?"
He answered and said, "It is one of the twelve, to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped it. The Son of Man indeed goes just as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born."
Psalm 41:9 Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.
Then Judas, who was betraying Him, answered and said, "Rabbi, is it I?"
He said to him, "You have said it."
And having dipped the bread, He gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. Now after the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus said to him, "What you do, do quickly." But no one at the table knew for what reason He said this to him. For some thought, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus had said to him, "Buy those things we need for the feast," or that he should give something to the poor.
And He said to them, "When I sent you without money bag, knapsack, and sandals, did you lack anything?"
So they said, "Nothing."
Then He said to them, "But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one. For I say to you that this which is written must still be accomplished in Me: 'And He was numbered with the transgressors.' For the things concerning Me have an end."
Isaiah 53:12 Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, And He bore the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.
So they said, "Lord, look, here are two swords."
And He said to them, "It is enough."
The devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray Him. Having received the piece of bread, he then went out immediately. And it was night.
So, when he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him. If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and glorify Him immediately.
The Disciples Argue About Greatness
Luke 22:24-30; John 33-35Now there was also a dispute among them, as to which of them should be considered the greatest. And He said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called 'benefactors.' But not so among you; on the contrary; he who is greatest among you let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves. For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? Yet I am among you as the One who serves.
"But you are those who have continued with Me in My trials. And I bestow upon you a kingdom, just as My Father bestowed one upon Me, that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel."
Little children, I shall be with you a little while longer. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, 'Where I am going, you cannot come,' so now I say to you. A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."
Jesus Predicts Peter's Denial
Matthew 26:31-35; Mark 14:27-31; Luke 22:31-34; John 13:36-38Then Jesus said to them, "All of you will be made to stumble because of Me this night, for it is written:
'I will strike the Shepherd, And the sheep of the flock will be scattered.'Zechariah 13:7 "Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd,
Against the Man who is My Companion,"
Says the LORD of hosts.
"Strike the Shepherd,
And the sheep will be scattered;
Then I will turn My hand against the little ones."But after I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee."
Simon Peter said to Him, "Lord, where are You going?"
Jesus answered him, "Where I am going you cannot follow Me now, but you shall follow Me afterward."
Peter said to Him, "Lord, why can I not follow You now? I will lay down my life for Your sake."
And the Lord said, "Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren."
Peter answered and said to Him, "Even if all are made to stumble because of You, yet I will not be. I will never be made to stumble."
Jesus answered him, "Will you lay down your life for My sake? Assuredly, I say to you that today, even this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times."
But he spoke more vehemently, and said to Him, "Lord, I am ready to go with You both to prison and to death. Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!" And so said all the disciples.
And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
Garden of Gethsemane
Matthew 26:36-46; Mark 14:32-42; Luke 22:39-46Coming out, He went to the Mount of Olives, a place called Gethsemane, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him. Then Jesus said to the disciples, "Sit here while I go and pray over there." He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, James, and John. He began to be troubled and deeply distressed. Then He said to them, "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me. Pray that you may not enter into temptation."
And He was withdrawn from them about a stone's throw, fell on His face, and prayed, the hour might pass from Him, saying, "O My Father, all things are possible for You, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will." Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow, and said to Peter, "What! Could you not watch with Me one hour? Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."
Again, a second time, He went away and prayed and spoke the same words, saying, "O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done." And when He returned, He found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy; and they did not know what to answer Him. Then He said to them, "Why do you sleep? Rise and pray, lest you enter into temptation."
So He left them, went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. Then He came to His disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough! Behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going. See, My betrayer is at hand."
Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane
Matthew 26:47-56; Mark 14:43-50; Luke 22:47-52; John 18:1-11And immediately, while He was still speaking He went out with His disciples over the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered. And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; for Jesus often met there with His disciples. Then Judas, one of the twelve, having received a detachment of troops, officers from the chief priests, Pharisees, scribes and elders of the people came there with lanterns, torches, swords and clubs.
Now His betrayer had given them a sign, saying, "Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him and lead Him away safely." Immediately he went up to Jesus and said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" and kissed Him.
But Jesus said to him, "Friend, why have you come? Are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?"
Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, "Whom are you seeking?"
They answered Him, "Jesus of Nazareth."
Jesus said to them, "I am." And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them. Now when He said to them, "I am," they drew back and fell to the ground.
Then He asked them again, "Whom are you seeking?"
And they said, "Jesus of Nazareth."
Jesus answered, "I have told you that I am. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way," that the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, "Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none."
Apocryphal writing, 2 Esdras 2:26 As for the servants whom I have given thee, there shall not one of them perish; for I will require them from among thy number. Then they came and laid their hands on Jesus and took Him. When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said to Him, "Lord, shall we strike with the sword?" And suddenly, Simon Peter stretched out his hand and drew his sword, struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. But Jesus answered and said, "Permit even this." And He touched his ear and healed him.
So Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword into the sheath for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels? Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me? How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen thus?"
Then Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the elders who had come to Him, "Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you did not seize Me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness. All this was done that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled."
John 6:39-40 This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day. And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day."
Then all the disciples forsook Him and fled.
Now a certain young man followed Him, having a linen cloth thrown around his naked body. And the young men laid hold of him, and he left the linen cloth and fled from them naked.
Jesus Faces Annas
John 18:12-13, 19-24Then the detachment of troops, the captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him. And they led Him away to Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was high priest that year. Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.
The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine.
Jesus answered him, "I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing. Why do you ask Me? Ask those who have heard what I said to them. Indeed they know what I said."
And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, "Do You answer the high priest like that?"
Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?"
Then Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
Peter Denies Jesus
Matthew 26:69-75; Mark 14:66-72; Luke 22:54-62; John 18:15-18, 25-27Having arrested Him, they led Him and brought Him into the high priest's house. But Peter followed at a distance and so did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest. But Peter stood at the door outside.
Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought Peter in.
Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, "You are not also one of this Man's disciples, are you?"
But he denied Him, saying, "Woman, I do not know Him." I neither know nor understand what you are saying."
And he went out on the porch, and a rooster crowed.
And when he had gone out to the gateway they had kindled a fire in the midst of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them. Another girl saw him and said to those who were there, "This fellow also was with Jesus of Nazareth. "Surely you also are one of them, for your speech betrays you. This fellow also was with Jesus of Nazareth. This is one of them."
But again he denied with an oath, "I do not know the Man!" A second time the rooster crowed.
Then after about an hour had passed, Peter stood with them and warmed himself. One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of him whose ear Peter cut off, confidently affirmed, saying to Peter, "Did I not see you in the garden with Him?"
Then he began to curse and swear, saying, "Man, I am not! I do not know this Man of whom you speak!"
Immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, "Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times." So Peter went out and wept bitterly.
Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin
Matthew 26:57-75, 27:1-2, Mark 14:53-65, 15:1 Luke 22:63-71, 23:1 John 18:19-24As soon as it was day, those who had laid hold of Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where all the chief priests, the scribes and the elders were assembled. But Peter followed Him at a distance to the high priest's courtyard. And he went in and sat with the servants to see the end.
Now the chief priests, the elders, and all the council sought false testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none. Even though many bore false witness against Him, they found none. But at last two false witnesses came forward and said, "This fellow said, 'I will destroy this temple made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.'" But not even then did their testimony agree.
Psalm 35:11 Fierce witnesses rise up; They ask me things that I do not know.
And the high priest arose and said to Him, "Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?" But Jesus kept silent and answered nothing. And the high priest answered and said to Him, "I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!"
Jesus said to him, "If I tell you, you will by no means believe. And if I also ask you, you will by no means answer Me or let Me go. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven."
Then they all said, "Are You then the Son of God?"
So He said to them, "You rightly say that I am."
Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, "He has spoken blasphemy! What further need do we have of witnesses? Look, now you have heard His blasphemy! What do you think?"
They answered and said, "What further testimony do we need? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth. He is deserving of death."
Now the men who held Jesus mocked Him, spat in His face and beat Him. Others struck Him on the face with the palms of their hands. And having blindfolded Him, and asked Him, saying, "Prophesy! Who is the one who struck You?" And many other things they blasphemously spoke against Him.
When morning came, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council, plotted against Jesus to put Him to death. And when they had bound Him, the whole multitude of them arose and led Him to Pontius Pilate the governor.
Judas Hangs Himself
Matthew 27:3-10Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, "I have sinned by betraying innocent blood."
And they said, "What is that to us? You see to it!"
Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself.
But the chief priests took the silver pieces and said, "It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because they are the price of blood." And they consulted together and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in. Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day.
Zechariah 11:12-13 And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver. And the Lord said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prised at of them.
Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, "And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the value of Him who was priced, whom they of the children of Israel priced, and gave them for the potter's field, as the LORD directed me."
Jesus Handed to Pontius Pilate
Matthew 27: 11-14, Mark 15:2-5, Luke 23:2-7, John 18:28-32Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium but they themselves did not go into the Praetorium, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover. Now Jesus stood before the governor. Pilate then went out to them and said, "What accusation do you bring against this Man?"
They answered and said to him, "If He were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him up to you."
And they began to accuse Him, saying, "We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, saying that He Himself is Christ, a King?"
And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He answered nothing.
Then Pilate said to Him, "Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?"
But He answered him not one word, so that the governor marveled greatly.
Isaiah 53:7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth.
Then Pilate asked Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?"
He answered and said to him, "It is as you say."
Then Pilate said to them, "You take Him and judge Him according to your law."
Therefore the Jews said to him, "It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death," that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled which He spoke, signifying by what death He would die.
Genesis 49:10 The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh comes; and to Him shall be the obedience of the people.
So Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowd, "I find no fault in this Man."
But they were the more fierce, saying, "He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee to this place."
When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked if the Man were a Galilean. And as soon as he knew that He belonged to Herod's jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time.
Jesus Faces Herod
Luke 23:8-12Now when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceedingly glad; for he had desired for a long time to see Him, because he had heard many things about Him, and he hoped to see some miracle done by Him. Then he questioned Him with many words, but He answered him nothing. And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused Him. Then Herod, with his men of war, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, arrayed Him in a gorgeous robe, and sent Him back to Pilate. That very day Pilate and Herod became friends with each other, for previously they had been at enmity with each other.
Jesus Returned to Pilate
Luke 23:13-25; John 18:33Then Pilate entered the Praetorium again, called Jesus, and said to Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?"
Jesus answered him, "Are you speaking for yourself about this, or did others tell you this concerning Me?"
Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered You to me. What have You done?"
Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here."
Pilate therefore said to Him, "Are You a king then?"
Jesus answered, "You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice."
Pilate said to Him, "What is truth?" And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, "I find no fault in Him at all.
Then Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people, said to them, "You have brought this Man to me, as one who misleads the people. And indeed, having examined Him in your presence, I have found no fault in this Man concerning those things of which you accuse Him; no, neither did Herod, for I sent you back to him; and indeed nothing deserving of death has been done by Him. I will therefore chastise Him and release Him".
The Soldiers Mock Jesus
Matthew 27:27-30; Mark 15:16-20; John 19:1-4So then Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole garrison around Him. And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him.
Isaiah 50:5-6 And I was not rebellious,
Nor did I turn away. I gave My back to those who struck Me,
And My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard;
I did not hide My face from shame and spitting.Isaiah 53:5 But He was wounded[k] for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed."And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. They clothed Him with purple and began to salute Him and bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" Then they spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head. They struck Him with their hands.
Pilate then went out again, and said to them, "Behold, I am bringing Him out to you, that you may know that I find no fault in Him." Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe.
And Pilate said to them, "Behold the Man!"
Taking the Place of Barabbas
Matthew 27:15-25; Mark 15:6-14; Luke 23:18-22; John 18:39-40, 19:5-12Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to releasing to the multitude one prisoner whom they wished. And at that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas who was a robber, chained with his fellow rebels who had committed murder in the rebellion. Then the multitude, crying aloud, began to ask him to do just as he had always done for them.
Therefore, when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, "But you have a custom that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Whom do you want me to release to you? Barabbas or Jesus who is called Christ?" For he knew that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.
Then they all cried again, saying, "Not this Man, but Barabbas!"
While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, "Have nothing to do with that just Man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of Him."
But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitudes that they should ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus.
Pilate said to them, "What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?"
They all said to him, "Let Him be crucified!"
Pilate answered and said to them again, "What then do you want me to do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?"
So they cried out again, "Crucify Him!"
Then he said to them the third time, "Why, what evil has He done? I have found no reason for death in Him.
But they cried out all the more, "Crucify Him!"
When Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all, but rather that a tumult was rising, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, "I am innocent of the blood of this just Person. You see to it."
And all the people answered and said, "His blood be on us and on our children."
Therefore, when Pilate heard that saying, he was the more afraid, and went again into the Praetorium, and said to Jesus, "Where are You from?" But Jesus gave him no answer.
Then Pilate said to Him, "Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have power to crucify You, and power to release You?"
Jesus answered, "You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin."
From then on Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out, saying, "If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar's friend. Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar."
Pilate's Decision
Matthew 27:31; Mark 15:13-15; Luke 23:23-25; John 19:13-16When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus out and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.
Now it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, "Behold your King!"
But they cried out, "Away with Him, away with Him! Crucify Him!"
Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your King?"
The chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar!"
They were insistent, demanding with loud voices that He be crucified. And the voices of these men and of the chief priests prevailed. So Pilate, wanting to gratify the crowd, gave sentence that it should be as they requested. And he released to them the one they requested, who for rebellion and murder had been thrown into prison; but he delivered Jesus to their will.
Therefore, when the chief priests and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, "Crucify Him, crucify Him!"
Pilate said to them, "You take Him and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him."
The Jews answered him, "We have a law, and according to our law He ought to die, because He made Himself the Son of God."
He delivered Him to them to be crucified; they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him away to be crucified.
The King on a Cross
Matthew 27:32-44; Mark 15:21-32; Luke 23:26-43; John 19:17-24Isaiah 52:8 He was taken from prison and from judgment,
And He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, where they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center. They found a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus, as he was coming out of the country and passing by and on him they laid the cross that he might bear it after Jesus.
And a great multitude of the people followed Him, and women who also mourned and lamented Him. But Jesus, turning to them, said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. For indeed the days are coming in which they will say, 'Blessed are the barren, wombs that never bore, and breasts which never nursed!' Then they will begin 'to say to the mountains, "Fall on us!" and to the hills, "Cover us!"' For if they do these things in the green wood, what will be done in the dry?"
And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals. Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do."
Now it was the third hour, and they crucified Him.
Sitting down, they kept watch over Him there. Pilate wrote a title and they put up over His head the accusation written against Him:
And the writing was:
THE KING OF THE JEWS.Then many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.
Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, "Do not write, 'The King of the Jews,' but, 'He said, "I am the King of the Jews." ' "
Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written."
So the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "And He was numbered with the transgressors."
Isaiah 53:12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, divided His garments, and made four parts, to determine what every man should take. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. They said therefore among themselves, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be," that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says:
Psalms 22:18 They divide My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.
Therefore the soldiers did these things.
And the people stood looking on. And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads and saying, "You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross."
Psalm 22:8 They shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,
"He trusted in the Lord, let Him rescue Him;
Let Him deliver Him, since He delights in Him!"Likewise the chief priests also, mocking with the scribes and elders, said, "He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ, the chosen of God. Let the Christ, the King of Israel, descend now from the cross that we may see and believe. He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for He said, 'I am the Son of God.'"
Psalm 22:12 Many bulls have surrounded Me;
Strong bulls of Bashan have encircled Me.
They gape at Me with their mouths,
Like a raging and roaring lion.Even those who were crucified with Him reviled Him.
Psalm 22:16-17 For dogs have surrounded Me;
The congregation of the wicked has enclosed Me.
They pierced My hands and My feet;
I can count all My bones.
They look and stare at Me.The soldiers also mocked Him, coming and offering Him sour wine, and saying, "If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself."
Psalm 22:15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd,
And My tongue clings to My jaws;
You have brought Me to the dust of death. Then they gave Him sour wine mingled with myrrh to drink. But when He had tasted it, He would not drink.
Psalm 69:21 In my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink
Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, "If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us."
But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, "Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong." Then he said to Jesus, "Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom."
And Jesus said to him, "Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise."
Behold Your Mother
Mark 15:40-41; John 19:25-27There were also women looking on from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the Less and of Joses, and Salome, who also followed Him and ministered to Him when He was in Galilee, and many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.
When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved [John] standing by, He said to His mother, "Woman, behold your son" Then He said to the disciple, "Behold your mother! " And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.
Jesus Dies on the Cross
Matthew 27:45-56; Mark 15:33-41; Luke 23:44-49; John 19:28-37Now from the sixth hour until the ninth there was darkness over all the land. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" that is, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?"
Amos 8:9-10
"And it shall come to pass in that day," says the Lord GOD,
"That I will make the sun go down at noon,
And I will darken the earth in broad daylight;
I will turn your feasts into mourning,
And all your songs into lamentation;
I will bring sackcloth on every waist,
And baldness on every head;
I will make it like mourning for an only son,
And its end like a bitter day.Psalm 22:1, "My God, My God, Why have you forsaken Me?"
Some of those who stood there, when they heard that, said, "This Man is calling for Elijah!"
After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, "I thirst!"
Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. The rest said, "Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to save Him."
So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!"
And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, "Father, 'into Your hands I commit My spirit.'" And bowing His head, He breathed His last.
Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many.
So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, "Certainly this was a righteous Man! Truly this was the Son of God!"
And the whole crowd who came together to that sight, seeing what had been done, beat their breasts and returned. But all His acquaintances and the women who followed Him from Galilee, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's sons, stood at a distance, watching these things.
Zechariah 12:10 "And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn.
Soldiers Pierced Jesus' Side
Mark 15:42; John 19:31-37Now when evening had come, because it was the Preparation Day, that is, the day before the Sabbath, (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, that the bodies should not remain on the cross. Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.
Numbers 9:12 They shall leave none of it until morning, nor break one of its bones. According to all the ordinances of the Passover they shall keep it.
But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may believe. For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, "Not one of His bones shall be broken." And again another Scripture says, "They shall look on Him whom they pierced."
Exodus 12:46 In one house it shall be eaten; you shall not carry any of the flesh outside the house, nor shall you break one of its bones.
Psalm 34:20 He guards all his bones; Not one of them is broken.
Jesus Buried in Joseph's Tomb
Matthew 27:57-61; Mark 15:43-47; Luke 23:50-56; John 19:38-42After this, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, a prominent council member, a good and just man who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, but secretly, for fear of the Jews. He had not consented to their decision and deed.
Coming and taking courage, this man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Pilate marveled that He was already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him if He had been dead for some time. So when he found out from the centurion, Pilate commanded the body to be given to him. When Joseph had taken the body, he bought fine linen.
And Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden nearby, and in the garden a new tomb that was hewn out of the rock in which no one had yet been laid. So there they laid Jesus, and rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.
And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses who had come with Him from Galilee followed after, sitting opposite the tomb, observed the tomb and how His body was laid. Then they returned and prepared spices and fragrant oils. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.
Pilate Sets a Guard
Matthew 27:62-66On the next day, which followed the Day of Preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees gathered together to Pilate, saying, "Sir, we remember, while He was still alive, how that deceiver said, 'After three days I will rise.' Therefore command that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest His disciples come [p]by night and steal Him away, and say to the people, 'He has risen from the dead.' So the last deception will be worse than the first."
Pilate said to them, "You have a guard; go your way, make it as secure as you know how." So they went and made the tomb secure, sealing the stone and setting the guard.
He Is Risen
Matthew 28:1-8; Mark 16:1-8; Luke 24:1-7;And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it. His countenance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. And the guards shook for fear of him, and became like dead men.
Now when the Sabbath was past, very early in the morning, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, that they might come and anoint Him. And they said among themselves, "Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?" But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb—for it was very large. Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
And it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this that behold, two men stood by them in shining garments. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a long white robe sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed.
Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, but he said to them, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen, as He said. Come; see the place where the Lord lay. Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, saying, 'The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.' "
And they remembered His words. "Go quickly and tell His disciples—and Peter—that He is risen from the dead, and indeed He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him. "
So they went out quickly and fled from the tomb, for they trembled and were amazed. And they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them, who told these things to the apostles.
The Soldiers Are Bribed
Matthew 28:11-15Now while they were going, behold, some of the guard came into the city and reported to the chief priests all the things that had happened. When they had assembled with the elders and consulted together, they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers, saying, "Tell them, 'His disciples came at night and stole Him away while we slept.' And if this comes to the governor's ears, we will appease him and make you secure." So they took the money and did as they were instructed; and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.
p>The Empty Tomb
John 20:1-10Then Mary Magdalene ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple (John), whom Jesus loved, as they mourned and wept and said to them, "They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him."
But Peter arose and ran to the tomb, with the other disciple. So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first. And he, stooping down and looking in, saw the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb marveling to himself at what had happened; and he saw the linen cloths lying there, and the handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed. For as yet they did not know the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. Then the disciples went away again to their own homes.
Mary Magdalene Sees the Risen Lord
John 20:11-18But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb. And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain
Then they said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?"
She said to them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him."
Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus.
Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?"
She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, "Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away."
Jesus said to her, "Mary!"
She turned and said to Him, "Rabboni!" (which is to say, Teacher).
Jesus said to her, "Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, 'I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.' "
Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her.
The Women Worship the Risen Lord
Matthew 28:8-10; Mark 16:9; Luke 24:9-11;He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons. [So the other women] went out quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to bring His disciples word. And as they went to tell His disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, "Rejoice!" So they came and held Him by the feet and worshiped Him. Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell My brethren to go to Galilee, and there they will see
Me."
Then they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. And their words seemed to them like idle tales, and they did not believe them.
The Road to Emmaus
Matthew 28:16; Mark 16:12-13; Luke 24:13-32Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them.
After that, He appeared in another form to two of them as they were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was seven miles from Jerusalem. And they talked together of all these things which had happened, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him. And He said to them, "What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you walk and are sad?"
Then the one whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, "Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there in these days?"
And He said to them, "What things?"
So they said to Him, "The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a Prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and crucified Him. But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened. Yes, and certain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb early, astonished us. When they did not find His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said He was alive. And certain of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see."
Then He said to them, "O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?" And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.
Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and He indicated that He would have gone farther. But they constrained Him, saying, "Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent." And He went in to stay with them.
Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight. And they said to one another, "Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?" And they went and told it to the rest, but they did not believe them either.
Jesus Appears to His Disciples
Matthew 28:17; Mark 16:14; Luke 24:32-43; John 20:19-20So they rose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, saying, "The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!" And they told about the things that had happened on the road and how He was known to them in the breaking of bread.
Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, as they said these things, the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews. Now Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, "Peace to you." But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed they had seen a spirit. And He said to them, "Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts? Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. Handle Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have."
When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet and His side. Then the disciples were glad and marveled when they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted. He said to them, "Have you any food here?" So they gave Him a piece of a broiled fish and some honeycomb. And He took it and ate in their presence.
Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen.
Doubting Thomas
Matthew 28:-; Mark 16:-Luke 24:44-45; John 20:24-29Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore said to him, "We have seen the Lord."
So he said to them, "Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe."
And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, "Peace to you!" Then He said to Thomas, "Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing."
Jesus said to him, "Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."
Then He said to them, "These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me." And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.
Breakfast by the Sea
John 21:1-23After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and in this way He showed Himself: Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing."
They said to him, "We are going with you also." They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.
Then Jesus said to them, "Children, have you any food?"
They answered Him, "No."
And He said to them, "Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some." So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.
Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea. But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits), dragging the net with fish. Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread.
Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish which you have just caught."
Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken. Jesus said to them, "Come and eat breakfast." Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, "Who are You?"— knowing that it was the Lord. Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish.
This is now the third time Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after He was raised from the dead.
So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?"
He said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You."
He said to him, "Feed My lambs."
He said to him again a second time, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?"
He said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You."
He said to him, "Tend My sheep."
He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?" Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, "Do you love Me?"
And he said to Him, "Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You."
Jesus said to him, "Feed My sheep. Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish." This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, "Follow Me."
Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, "Lord, who is the one who betrays You?" Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, "But Lord, what about this man?"
Jesus said to him, "If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me."
Then this saying went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, "If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you?"
The Scriptures Opened
Matthew28:18-20; Luke 24:44-45; Mark 16:15-18; John 20:24-23Then He said to them, "These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me." And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.
Then He said to them, "Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And you are witnesses of these things. Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high."
And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them.
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover." And lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." [And Matthew said] Amen.
So Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you." And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."
The Ascension
Mark 16:19-20; Luke: 24:51-52; John 20:30-31, 21:24-25Now it came to pass, while He blessed them, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. And they worshiped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple praising and blessing God. [And Luke said] Amen.
So then, they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. [And Mark said] Amen.
And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.
This is the disciple who testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true. And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. [And John said] Amen.
